Aesthetics of Circular Architecture

Would you like to delve deeper and learn more about designing with circular materials in construction? In this (Dutch spoken) program, various professionals share their experiences with circular design, material choices, and ideas regarding aesthetics, followed by a discussion.

The aesthetics of circular architecture are characterized by an honest, often raw appearance in which reused materials and demountable structures are visible. The aesthetic starting point shifts from perfection to a “storytelling” design, where materials are given a second life and the building structure is often adaptable.

Materials with a history

A characteristic of circular aesthetics is, among other things, visible origin. Materials with a history, such as reused bricks, wood, or steel, give buildings a unique character. Another specific element is the often demountable detailing. Connections are often visible (bolts instead of glue), resulting in a technical, robust aesthetic. The use of bio-based materials is also characteristic. Natural materials such as wood, hemp, or straw create a warm, organic look. Finally, flexibility and modularity are typical of circular architecture. Designs that adapt to the times, leading to modular facades and open structures. Finally, there is often ‘waste-based design’. The use of waste streams as aesthetic base material, such as in interiors or facade cladding.
